Cities: Skylines!

Well, we did it! Cities: Skylines became a surprise hit, its success both critically and commercially caught all of us at the studio off guard. I can't really properly describe how I feel about all this. One day back in 1990 I was a wee boy playing Super Mario Bros on the NES, later upgraded to PCs never daring to even dream of becoming a game artist and now I'm here, working for almost five years now as a game artist and game designer on the third game project of my career and we made a god damn epic game, surprise hit! It's a blast seeing our game being covered in the games' media as well as regular media, it being played on Twitch.tv with thousands of people tuning in to watch streamers build their cities. Pinch me, I got to know that this is really happening!

Started reading Eclipse Phase, a transhumanism scifi, horror and conspiracy tabletop RPG rulebook. Basically it is Deus Ex, Dead Space, Pandorum, Event Horizon, System Shock 2 and a bit of Mass Effect bundled into one and more.

In the game's world of tomorrow humanity has advanced to the next step in evolution where man and machine have become one. You are able to upload your consciousness into a HDD and switch bodies ("morphs" in the game's universe) as you see fit and/or the mission demands. And if you have the money and/or resources, you can't actually die since you can download your backup into a new morph, "re-sleeve" yourself so to speak. And these morphs come in various forms depending what functions they have and what needs they need to serve such as bodies designed for combat ("fury morphs"), infiltration, data mining and more. Some are human in appearance while others are more animal-like. Oh, and there are sentient animals too. You can play as a cephalopod if you want (humans uplifted various animals into sentience back in the day).

Earth has been ravaged into a nuclear wasteland in an event known as the Fall when a group of seed AIs who reached singularity became self-aware and multiplied, then waged a devastating war against humanity and suddenly disappeared. Earth is off-limits because of the toxins in the atmosphere, the remnants of the AIs roaming the surface and other hazardous things that lurk under the dust clouds.

And other fun stuff like that. There is certainly potential for all sorts of adventures from corporate espionage to treasure hunt on the surface of Earth (and other planets). You can also step into a Pandora gate and travel to other systems if our own solar system doesn't provide enough excitement.

Good times.

Oh, and if you are interested in the game, you can pick up the PDFs for free from one of the designer's blogs. Since they are the cool cats that they are, they are providing the core books for no fee as downloadable material here

If you had to choose one fate for yourself  which one would it be?

Let me clarify the deal a bit about what each of the choices means in this context:

Zombie Apocalypse
We are talking the kind of situation that you can see in movies like Dawn of the Dead and TV shows like The Walking Dead. Some kind of virus has spread around the world and most of the human population is reduced to mindless, flesh-eating walking corpses. They don't feel pain, thirst or hunger in the way we do. They don't get tired when chasing their prey and can walk hundreds of miles; even if you think you have escaped, the horde will one be at your doorstep if you are unlucky to stay in their way as the herd shuffles on. There is no stable society, people have to fend for themselves and scavenge what they can to survive. They can build fortifications and try to make their lives as safe as possible but the danger of the horde is ever present. But they have friends, even families and they can stick together and try to outlive the horrible plague. They need to rely on teamwork to survive. However, as much as every living human they meet can be a valuable ally, they can also be a dangerous enemy. It's all about group dynamics and luck. Maybe they will not meet hostile living and stay safe from the hordes. Maybe not. But they have each other to rely on.

Erased Identity
Erased Identity is about some mysterious government agency or cabal destroying every last bit of information the world has of you. They can turn every person you know and love against you. Your family doesn't know who you are and they will rather call the police than wait for your pleas and explanations. Your bank accounts are blocked, the key to your house doesn't fit and there are strange people living in there. Someone has claimed all your achievements for themselves and no one at work has ever even heard of you. You cannot trust anyone because you don't know just how far it all goes. You don't know why this was done to you. All you know is that you have something they want and they are willing and able to do anything to get it. But you don't even know what that is. Is it information about something that you subconsciously have come to know? Perhaps you have come to possess something that seems irrelevant to you but is actually dangerous in the wrong hands. You cannot return home, you cannot ask the authorities for help because every time you try to prove who you are there comes up something that pulls the carpet under your evidence. They might even think you are delusional and should be locked up in mental institution. You are always running from them, hiding and trying to come by doing odd jobs and keeping on the move. But hey! At least there are no living dead lurking around you, right?

So what do you think? Which would be more horrible fate of the two?

P.s. I will put a poll also if someone wants to answer.

Wacom Inkling

So, today I went and bought the Wacom Inkling sketching tool. Yeah, that's about it, I guess. I'll see what I can get done with it and if it gets the creative vibes going. In the meantime, here is a photo of her (yes, my Inkling is now officially "her").
